Sign Mistakes That Could Cost You Some Business

Blog

When you run a business, the signs that you display as advertising around town can be integral for driving people to your front doors. However, a poorly executed sign design can easily have the opposite effect — and you could experience a decrease in your business because of your sign design. If you're putting together some ideas for some advertising signs, it's ideal to work with a designer and sign producer that has extensive experience. A representative of the company will be able to look at your ideas and, based on his or her experience in the industry, identify potential pitfalls. Here are some mistakes that you don't want to make:

Use Of Similar Colors

People who are in front of your sign may only look at it for a second — and this may be enough to make them want to learn more or want to continue moving on. A mistake that some businesses make is having too many similar colors on their sign. In doing so, it may be difficult for a passing pedestrian or motorist to make out the wording. For example, if your business's colors are blue and purple, you might like the idea of blue text on a purple background. However, this design can be difficult to read, and if someone feels it's a challenge to understand your sign, he or she is apt to ignore it.

Suggestive Message

Many businesses subscribe to the theory that sex and controversy sell, but this isn't always a good approach for your advertising. While it's true that a suggestive sign can attract people to it, the nature of your message can bother some people. You might think that a suggestive and catchy sign is the perfect way to draw people to your business, but you may end making people decide that they'll never support your business — and some people may even take up your time by calling to voice their displeasure over your sign.

Too Much Information

There's a fine line about how much information you should include on your business's signs. If there's too little information, people may not have enough details to know about what you do. This could compel you to add lots of information to your sign design, but too much information can be a bad idea, too. When there's a surplus of information, people who are traveling past the sign may have difficulty deciphering its contents. In many cases, people won't stop to learn more — they'll simply ignore the sign and keep moving. Your sign designer should be able to give you a good idea of how much information will suit your desired sign size.

Never Underestimate the Importance of Good Business Signs

When I started my first business, I had taken a few business classes in college, but I still had a lot to learn. I had a good product to sell, but at first, sales were very slow. I wasn't sure just how to drum up business, and I didn't have money left in my budget to invest in a big marketing campaign. I was very lucky that local marketing professional stopped into my business, and although I couldn't afford to hire him, he did give me one free important tip: invest in better signage! Since signs are relatively affordable, I took his advice and traded in my old banner for a quality professionally designed sign. Foot traffic and sales increased rapidly. I learned a lot during the sign design process that I want to share on my new blog to help other small business owners out there who are struggling!
